Chloe Lee, Marketing Manager, DoSomething.org
Chloe, a Marketing Manager for a cause-focused nonprofit, turned her internship experience into a full-time job. At DoSomething.org, she works with a variety of media and corporate partners to promote campaigns that inspire social change among young people worldwide.
When building integrated partnerships, Chloe can be as creative as she wants when bringing them to life. She allows testing and research to lead campaign strategy and tactics, and continues to learn from her partners and programs. Follow Chloe on Twitter @ChloloLee and check out her interview:
On school:
I studied Urban and Environmental Policy and Sociology in college. The college course that was most relevant to my career so far was definitely my community organizing class that I took senior year. In this class, we studied how to turn people's passion for particular issues into action and mobilize a community to make impact. This is especially important in my current position to understand what young people care about and how we can mobilize them to take action in their community.
On tools and resources:
Social media and industry newsletters (like Cynopsis, Seth's Blog) are the best at keeping up with trends. As an organization, we love Trello for project management!
On her current job:
My top responsibility is to build integrated marketing partnerships to drive member acquisition and media impressions for cause campaigns and evergreen programs. This includes research, pitches, strategy, and management of strategic partnerships.
Advice:
The advice that I would give to my college self is to apply for many different internships and to explore different fields. Internships are all about learning - gaining experience in particular industries and to build your resume, but also to figure out your own career path. You'll never know what a certain field or department is like until you try it out and internships are perfect for this. In terms of building your network, don't be afraid to take someone to coffee for an informational interview. If you really connect with someone, ask them to be your mentor!
On her department:
Our marketing & PR team at DoSomething.org is very small (but mighty!). Our team consists of a PR intern, one full time staff member dedicated to PR and Talent Relations and one dedicated to marketing, all under our Chief Marketing Officer. We are a very close-knit team, working together everyday and sometimes overlapping to support each other!
On the biggest news in her industry and how she gets her news:
At DoSomething.org, we are constantly chatting with other not-for-profits to keep updated on what they’re doing and if we can work together to amplify either our programs or theirs to make more impact. The best way we keep up with our industry and other not-for-profits is to have really great relationships with them and be really transparent so we can learn from each other. For example, we have different cause spaces that we build campaigns around. When our campaigns team comes up with a new campaign, they run it by other leaders/organizations in the space to receive feedback from them.
